Direct comparison with Condrieu Wines gave an indication of the classic French style. Then to fit this into Australian conditions with a lower than usual total acidity while retaining the distinctive honeysuckle character in both nose and palate so indicative of the variety. The wine is quite forward in flavour and so demanded early bottling to capture its varietal trueness.

Wine maker notes
PHILOSOPHY The Haan Viognier 2003 reinforces the philosophy of making super premium quality wines from only estate grown grapes. The understanding, care, and attention to style and detail are all of the highest order and show clearly in this most rare of white wines.

VITICULTURE First Viognier plantings in the Haan vineyard started in 1997 and have continued until now there is 3.6 hectares planted. Of these 1.2 hectares is in full production.

Viogner is quite rare in Australia and for that matter it is also rare around the world. This planting was one of the first in the Barossa floor, and from what we see in the wine, produces very excellent varietal characters.

The particular grapes that make the Haan Viognier 2003 are hand-picked from the outer canopy and as such show a greater biscuit-like lift in bouquet and flavour to those of its sister wine made from inner canopy grapes.

This technique of separation within the canopy has produced some amazing differences that have shown different appeal to different consumers.

We travelled the world in search of the ultimate home for us, a place that would fulfil our dream of being makers of very special, unique wine. Many places charmed us -- Cyprus, France, Portugal, Spain, Madeira, New Zealand, Victoria, Tasmania, Margaret River and the Hunter Valley -- but we kept returning to the Barossa Valley, drawn by all it had to offer:
  • A unique district that maintains many of the great traditions lost in other areas.
  • A strong commitment to preserving a great vineyard heritage (where special wine starts!) rather than letting it be taken over by industry or sub-division.
  • A climate with four very distinct seasons.
  • A wonderful sense of community where everyone works together for the common good, taking pride in the achievements of one and all.
Upon seeing our 45-acre vineyard, we knew we had discovered the vineyard and home of our dream. The blend of the old classic Barossa feel and subtle Mediterranean influences in our home is a philosophy carried over to our wines.

As we hoped, our wines are being enjoyed as symbols of the Barossa’s simple elegance - a reflection of truly special wine traditions.
